The Promise of Generative AI in India and the Need for Responsible Governance


In its simplest form, artificial intelligence is the field that combines computer science with robust data sets to enable problem solving. This also includes the machine learning and deep learning sub-areas often mentioned in connection with artificial intelligence. These areas consist of AI algorithms aimed at creating expert systems that make predictions and classifications based on input data.

The advent of Generative AI presents an exciting frontier for India, opening up new avenues for creativity, innovation, and economic growth. AI being a new technology, is gradually making a stronger place for itself in our day to day lives. According to the latest available data, ChatGPT currently has over 100 million users. And the website currently generates 1.8 billion visitors per month. This user and traffic growth was achieved in a record-breaking three-month period (from February 2023 to April 2023).

We surveyed 1080 Indians to understand their perception on AI and its impact. While most Indians are not aware of AI, those aware are optimistic about the future and are more than willing to adapt and learn. However, there is a need to proactively consider the ethics and regulations around the same

Indians are optimistic about AI, GenZers in particular are enthusiastic and are seen to be fast adopting the tech. AI has found multiple use cases and is extensively being leveraged for content creation and assistance.

More than 65% of respondents feel that surge of AI and upskilling must go hand in hand. Upskilling can ensure better adaptation to the new normal.


The impact of Generative AI is far-reaching and its acceptance in India noteworthy. Whereas Indians feel that AI has multiple uses and India should invest in it to stay competitive, it also raises ethical considerations and needs to safeguard against its potential misuses.
